The Daily Consciousness: Once Upon a time you two were rocking Ontario, what brought you to Halifax?
Halifax brought us to Halifax! On tours we’ve always liked the coast the best, and been fans of bands who live here. Mostly we felt a pull toward living near this particular ocean at this particular time. We feel very comfortable here, though we don’t leave our cave much.
The Daily Consciousness: We’re very curious… is there a story behind the name “cursed arrows”?
We were calling ourselves Arrows because we liked the image of archery. We were nerds. But after a couple of years we realized how common a band name it was. We felt like we’d been down on our luck, constantly suffering setbacks. When we changed our name it reflected a change in our band and our music as well – no more bullshit laziness. No more blending in.
The Daily Consciousness: What influenced your upcoming release of “The Madness of Crowds?”
We wrote a couple of albums’ worth of songs beginning immediately after we finished Telepathic High Five. We started writing acoustic songs out of necessity. We had no money and no longer had access to a place to practice. So this is the first time any of our songs started out quietly – with our last couple of albums, we wrote every song together on guitar and drums. We also found ourselves delving deep into research about world events – books, films, news, propaganda. The oil spill(s), wars, the G20. Politics in general. The Madness of Crowds has shaped up to be a concept album of sorts. But we think it just sounds like a rock album.
The Daily Consciousness: Is the musical influence equal between you too? Occasionally In duo’s power-struggles occur. Have you had to deal with anything similar to this?
Our song-writing styles have shifted over a few albums, but our band is always an equal partnership. Ry used to write all of the guitar parts and most of the lyrics and I would exclusively play drums. With The Madness of Crowds, I wrote several of the songs alone on acoustic guitars, and then we played them together electrically. Sometimes Ry plays drums; sometimes I play guitar. It feels balanced to us, but things have changed a lot since we started. We like change.
The Daily Consciousness: If you could recommend our readers two artists would they be?
Presumably your readers already know about Dog Day and Bad Vibrations, two of the best bands in town. So I’ll also mention a writer named Andrew Hood and a photographer, Richard Lann.
The Daily Consciousness: Aside from rocking out, do you guys have any other hobbies or interests?
We definitely don’t do much outside of making music and working day jobs. We devote a lot of energy to eating well…but we never get enough sleep. Music overtakes most of our other interests, but we read a lot, write poetry, draw. We always make time for comedy, especially The Daily Show and Portlandia. We go insane if we don’t have enough comedy in our lives.
The Daily Consciousness: Plans for a CD Release party?
I believe we’re doing an all-ages CD release show April 22 before we head out on tour.
The Daily Consciousness: To wrap this up we just want to say thanks for sparing us your time. Have you any final comments for our readers & your fans?
Thanks for asking us some good questions. We are in love with this album. We love playing these songs. That has never happened before; we tortured ourselves too much on previous albums. We drove ourselves mad in different ways writing this one. I think we’re onto something spectacular and can’t wait for everyone to hear it. - Jack E
